Sodium nitrate NaNO₃ is a white solid which is very soluble in water. It is nitrogen-rich and classed within the ‘salt’ family. It is a readily available source of the nitrate anion (NO₃) which is useful in several reactions carried out on industrial levels for the production of fertilizers, pyrotechnics, glass, pottery enamels, food preservatives and rocket propellants. It has been mined extensively for these purposes.  

Sodium nitrate is obtained by ‘leaching’ caliche ore, i.e. as water passes through the ore it removes sodium nitrate. Alternatively, it can be produced by the reaction of sodium hydroxide and nitric acid or as a co-product from the manufacture of metal catalysts. Historically, this co-product would have been disposed of as a waste effluent, but it is now recovered, concentrated and crystallised for onward sale. It is used in metal treatment and to produce glass, ceramics and explosives.

We offer Sodium Nitrate with or without an anti-caking agent, and also in liquid form to a variety of strengths. Sodium Nitrate is commonly used:
